21 Mar World Book Day and Scruffy!
At Holy Apostles’ preschool we celebrated World Book Day on the 3rd of March 2022!
We are lucky enough to have published children’s author, Katy Unsworth working at Preschool – author of Speak Scruffy! Have a Go! We spent the week reading the book and participating in lots of book-related nursery learning activities.
Speak Scruffy! Have a Go! is a picture storybook which teaches culture, the world, travel, kindness, and to celebrate difference to ‘have a go’ – persevere and speak French confidently.
There are many learning opportunities to be gained from sharing books! We also:
1. Made flags
This helped our mark-making development, shape identification, expressive art and design learning, and also enabled a better understanding of the world and its countries.
2. Studied the globe
We again gained a better understanding of the world and talked about transport, travel, countries, oceans and languages. We continued to develop positive attitudes about the differences between people.
3. Started to learn French with the book characters
A fabulous opportunity to further our communication and language development. Mrs Unsworth had characters from the book with her.
We said ‘Bonjour’ to Scruffy and Whiskers and even shook their paws. We counted to 10 in French and sang Frère Jacques. We grew in confidence and ‘had a go’ at speaking French in front of our peers – just like Scruffy!
4. Learned about kindness
Personal, social and emotional development was evident when the pre-schoolers were talking about feelings and how Scruffy felt all alone in another country.
‘Kindness’ is a theme in the book, and we talked about how helping one another is good, just like Whiskers helping Scruffy in the story. We are able to link this to our Holy Apostles’ Pre-school Promises.
5. Worked on story making and story maps
The pre-schoolers used the story map and story props to see if we could remember the structure of the story. We had a tuff tray of props from the book. Lots of fun was had playing independently with the props and role-playing parts of the story.
This nursery learning activity provided lots of opportunities for literacy development, communication and language development.
6. Enjoyed some aeroplane play
Mrs Unsworth made a Scruffy aeroplane from a big cardboard box. We had endless fun group role playing, and imaginary play opportunities were evident – the children travelled all over the world!
7. Coloured in pictures from the book
The children had an opportunity for expressive art and design and furthered their physical development through mark-making.
Holy Apostles’ pre-schoolers really enjoyed World Book Day…
…but it was great that everyone was able to continue to enjoy a wide variety of other book-related nursery learning activities throughout the week, too!
