21 Sep Nature Walk around Holy Apostles’ Pre-school
Wednesday Afternoon Nature Walk
Holy Apostles’ playgroup children went on a nature walk around the school field. What an adventure!
Each child was armed with a bag to fill and excitedly set off to gather their treasure. The children found such a variety of items including lots of sticks, branches, feathers, daisies, dandelions, acorns, buttercups and leaves. They used their observational skills to search for unusual objects. Some children found animal holes; we talked about what sort of animal might have dug the hole.
When we got back to playgroup we emptied our bags onto the table and talked about the objects we had found. We looked carefully at the items and compared our treasure.
We discussed changes that happen during the season of autumn. Some children had noticed how the leaves on most of the trees were beginning to change colour; they compared the variety of coloured leaves they had collected. Children also took time to count some of their found items and group them into sets.
Tuesday Afternoon Nature Walk
Holy Apostles’ playgroup afternoon group decided to enjoy the sunshine. We set off on a nature walk to the outdoor classroom. We walked across the field, where we had to be patient whilst the grass cutter tractor passed us by! This provoked lots of observations and questions about the grass cutter! After finding our way into the secluded area we noticed large bushes and long grass; we thought the Gruffalo might appear! However the children were very excited to discover a log circle and a stone circle. They had fun climbing and sitting on the stones and logs for a few minutes after collecting items to put their bags.
They had great fun exploring the outdoor classroom and were quick to find Mole Hill, so-called because there is a hole at the top which the children spotted and we thought it might have been made by a mole!
The group returned to pre-school across the field to eagerly look at the natural treasure we had found on our walk! The children started to compare, sort and count the items they had found and some children asked to take their treasure home!
We all had a brilliant time exploring the natural world around us!
