27 Feb Holy Apostles’ Transport Topic
Parents of prospective pupils looking at local preschools, often ask us when they visit Holy Apostles if we plan topics around the children’s ideas and interests. The answer is yes!
We planned a topic on transport which was a direct response to children’s interests. We thought about related activities we could share with the children and introduced the topic by talking about different types of vehicles. The children talked about their experiences of using different sorts of transport. They also said how they travelled to Holy Apostles’ Preschool in the morning.
They really enjoyed making tyre pictures using a selection of toy vehicles dipped in paint; they rolled the vehicles onto the paper and were interested to see the patterns they could make.
George and Cordelia enthusiastically rolled their vehicles over their paper.
George than chose a larger truck to see what the tyre prints looked like!
Holy Apostles’ pre-schoolers then had some carpet time where they learnt about road safety; we talked about our bag of road signs and the pedestrian crossing that we were planning to use in the outdoor area. They listened carefully as the stop and go sign was shown to them.
Cordelia demonstrates the red stop sign and green go sign that the children will need to watch out for when they are outside using their bikes and scooters. We also talked about how to use a pedestrian crossing and the need to look and listen whilst crossing a road. We also talked about road safety and the importance of listening to adults when crossing roads! This is especially invaluable when they will go on to apply this to their daily walk to their local preschool.
Then it was time to set up our mini road system outside the pre-school; we had cones, stop and go signs, a pedestrian crossing and road workers at work signs!
The girls carefully use the pedestrian crossing and Marcus obeys the “STOP” sign in readiness for the road works!
Even the youngest group members joined in and all will hopefully remember the safety talk when they are next out!
We finished our topic weeks with the children’s favourite activity of junk modelling! They were very creative with cardboard boxes, tubes and yoghurt pots! Lots of opportunities for learning including counting out the number of bottle tops required for wheels! Vehicles included “Daddy’s car”, a train, bus and spaceship!
Lots of fun was had by everyone at Holy Apostles’ Preschool!
